MISSION STATEMENT

Since the foundation, the human rights protection and civil society development support, stays the most priority area of our work. During these years some positive changes took place in different spheres of public life in Georgia, but the issue of protection fundamental democratic values and rule of law is still shaky.

Georgia still faces challenges of political instability, social and economic hardship, lack of political culture and civil awareness as well as the other more or less vulnerable issues.

Regardless of problems our society is committed to peace and democracy which requires a well developed democratic institutions, values and procedures. The mission of the Union "Century 21" is to contribute to the process of development in the country.

Since our foundation we stay faithful to our core principles expressed in the motto of the organisation:

The elimination of all forms of discrimination and intolerance is one of the necessary conditions for democracy and civil society building process.

The struggle against violence is one of the most important objectives for our country having declared its commitment of integration into western structures.

Despite some positive changes in the recent years, international community still remains critical, particularly in terms of protection the rigths of minority and other mirginalized groups.

The Union "Century 21" has declared 2005 as tolerance promotion year with particular emphasis of non-discrimination activities within its permanent programmes and special initiatives.

We focus on activities dedicated at achieving the respect for diversity in the society.

RECENT ACTIVITIES

The project: “Regional Youth Councils for the Protection of Civil and Political Rights” which was running from June to December 2006 has been finished and the final activity report has been produced. The project envisaged the monitoring of human rights’ violations in selected regions as well as non-formal educational activities for young people. The project was aimed at promoting the dialogue and understanding on the basic civil and political rights, with particular attention on rights of various minority groups. Young people, most of them high schools students, were taught in universal human values as the ground for democracy and pluralism in the society. The monitoring was not conducted by professional human rights workers, but by young people who were acquainted in basic skills and techniques of human rights monitoring. As regards the seminars and workshops within the educational activities, they were highly estimated by young people during the final evaluation. The project was supported by the Norwegian Human Rights Foundation (NHRF).

On 5 December, 2006 was held the meeting within the European Youth Campaign for Diversity, Human Rights, and Participation “ALL DIFFERENT – ALL EQUAL”. The meeting was hosted by the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia. The participants were from non-governmental organizations (youth organizations as well as those with an active youth divisions) and from different governmental structures (ministries and the parliamentarian committees). The project “Advancing Democracy through Combating Hate Crimes in Georgia” has been started. The project covers various activities, such as analysis of the legislation related to the hate crimes issues, monitoring and reporting hate motivated incidents in regions, cooperation with relevant state structures in order to identify current challenges in this field. In the project are involved European non-governmental organisations having a rich experience of monitoring and reporting hate motivated incidents. “At the heart of every civilised and progressive society lies respect for human rights. This pocket database is designed to be carried close to the heart of every Georgian lawmaker” wrote HM Ambassador Donald McLaren of McLaren in the preface of the guide book on human rights which was prepared by the Union “Century 21”.

On International Human Rights Day - December 10, the Guide Book was disseminated among the members of the Parliament of Georgia. It was sent to the President of Georgia as well as to the representatives of various governmental structures.
